I love me a good knit-knock off, and this front and back post double crochet ribbing fits the bill! I use this stitch in my Puzzlewood Cowl pattern, but you can easily adapt it to use in all sorts of patterns!

This tutorial will walk you through working it flat in patterns, but if you check out this full step-by-step tutorial video I will show you how to work it both flat and in the round! Around hats! Ribbing on necks, wrists, button bands and more garments! Cup Cozies! It’s a great knit-look knock off, with the right combo of stretch and tightness. Endless possibilities!

Let me show you how!

Normally, you insert your hook in the top loops of the stitches. For post stitches, you insert your hook around the post of the stitch.

FPDC: “front post double crochet” (has a faux-knit stitch look in the way it raises to the front of the fabric)

BPDC: “back post double crochet” (has a faux-purl stitch look in the way that it raises off the back of the fabric)

(*note, this post will be focusing on how to use post stitches in double crochets, but you can easily adapt this to single crochet, half double crochet, treble crochets, etc. Just work around the posts in the same way!)

Front Post Double Crochet: Insert hook from front to back of the post (or “behind” the post so hook is under, post is on top), pushing the post to the front. Then work a double crochet.

Back Post Double Crochet: Insert hook from the back to the front of the post ( or so hook is on top of post, post is behind), pushing the post to the back. Work a double crochet.

You’ll want to start with a number of chains divisible by 2!

1.You will need a foundation row of normal double crochets. So, double crochet into 3rd chain from hook, double crochet across. Turn.

2. Chain 2 (doesn’t count as first st) , double crochet in same st. *FPDC in next st, BPDC In following at.* Repeat across, double crochet in last stitch. Turn.

Just continue repeating Row 2 until you reach your desired length! Make sure you are always working front post stitches into front post stitches, and back post stitches into back post stitches, otherwise you will get a totally different texture! You can see all the front post stitches pop to the front and all the back post stitches pop out to the back!
