FREE Crochet Cowl Pattern with Fringe and Buttons

Hope everyone in the US had a marvelous Thanksgiving holiday, even if it was different from your normal! I am so thankful for all of you, so we are doing a FREE pattern this week to celebrate how much I appreciate YOU!

This is a pattern I published back in 2018, but it has always been one of my most popular items at markets! And it’s in my top 5 favorite handmade pieces to wear because it’s so EASY! It won’t fall off and you won’t finding yourself having to adjust it constantly- but you LOOK fancy! It’s also a really quick make due to the bulky yarn, if you’re in need of a gift make! The fringe and buttons make it a real show stopping crowd pleaser- I’m always getting comments from people like “I’ve never seen one like that before!”

This super thick & cozy crocheted fringed cowl is a quick & easy accessory to make & enjoy all winter long. Inspired by my life-long love of Tolkien & Middle Earth, this chunky fringed cowl works up quickly & is an easy piece to layer on to any outfit- for added warmth or just for fun! It’s worked flat, then folded & sewn together, & all done in a simple Herringbone Half Double Crochet stitch. This cowl is a project easy
enough for an adventurous beginner, but the end look is anything but simple!

Skill level: advanced beginner
Sizing: One size fits all. Finished cowl, unfolded & unsewn roughly 8.5” by 36”
Gauge: 10 Herringbone Half Double Crochets by 7 rows = 4×4 inch square

Materials:

 2 skeins of *Premier Serenity Chunky Yarn
(or ~218 yds any bulky/5-weight you like!)
 Crochet hook sized M/9mm (some brands may be labels as N/9mm or M/N 9mm. Basically, get a 9mm one!)
 Ruler or tape measure
 Tapestry needle to weave in ends
 Optional: 3 buttons
**(in this design the buttons are nonfunctional, as there is really no need to unbutton this cowl & therefore are completely optional. But any size or style- or even amount- you like will do!)

Stitches Used/Abbreviations:
Ch- chain
Sc- single crochet
Sl st- slip stitch
Hhdc- Herringbone Half Double Crochet

Stitch Explanation:
the HERRINGBONE HALF DOUBLE CROCHET (Hhdc)
This stitch, which is a bit like a slip stitch & a half double crochet combined, creates an intricate, but rugged-looking textured. The Hhdc causes a distinctive tilt of the stitches, creating the faux-Herringbone/arrow shaped design.
Step 1: Yarn over.

Step 2: Insert your hook into the next
stitch.

Step 3: Yarn over & draw through the
stitch & the first loop on your hook.

Step 4: Yarn over, & draw through both
remaining loops on your hook.

Pattern:

1) Chain 82.
2) Turn & yarn over & insert your hook to the 3nd stitch from the hook. Yarn over & draw through the stitch & the first loop on your hook. Yarn over & draw through the remaining loops on your hook. Continue in the Hhdc stitch across (80 total stitches)
3) Ch 1 (counts as first Hhdc throughout), Hhdc across (80 total stitches)
4-15) Repeat row 3 until you’ve reached 15 total rows of Hhdc.
16) Ch 1 (counts as first sc), SC across 78 stitches, sl st into last stitch. Cut yarn, but do
not sew in ends yet.

Cowl Folding:

1) With rectangular cowl lying flat, fold the right side down (approximately 1/3 of cowl), then fold the left side down (another 1/3 of the cowl) to align the short side of the left with the previously folded long side of the right.
2) Tack the cowl so that it stays in place by sewing in the 2 strands of yarn from your beginning & end points. (No need to sew the entire edge of cowl in place. The buttons & the fringe will ensure that it holds this shape)
3) Sew in & cut any remain ends.

Sewing Buttons: Place buttons on top of cowl & sew them on through both layers of the front bottom right edge.

Fringe Tassels :
*I choose 3 wooden buttons but use any you like! Sew the two on either end onto the cowl first & second, & then space the third button evenly in the middle. Any needle & thread will do, but I chose to split off one of the strands of my chunky yarn into a thinner piece & sew on the buttons with this so that the colors & style would be an exact
match!

**the buttons on this cowl are purely for looks! They are placed on top & sewn through both layers, making them nonfunctional (as there is really no reason to need to unbutton it). Since they are not crucial to the construction of the garment, the button
step can be skipped all together if you would rather style your cowl without them!

For the fringe tassels I cut 72 pieces of my yarn in approximately 8 inch lengths, & then grouped them in 24 bundles of 3 to create my fringe. Taking bundles (3 pieces, folded in half) of desired length, working along the entire bottom edge of your cowl, insert your hook from the back /wrong side of the piece (going through both layers on places where the cowl overlaps itself) & use it to draw each bundle of yarn through.

Pull the end pieces of the bundle through the loop you’ve created & a pull tightly, creating a knot. Space fringe tassels every inch or so for uniform spacing.

*It is helpful to start with a bundle at the center point in the front of the cowl, & a bundle at the half way/middle point of the back of the cowl & then work evenly in both directions from there)
**Once finished attaching all fringe tassel bundles, if you’re not happy with the ends or length, you can go back & trim them all to create a neat, uniform appearance!
***You could skip the fringe all together if you prefer the cowl without, or easily alter the lengths or bundle size to suit your preferences!
