How to Crochet the Extended Half Double Crochet Stitch

I love a simple variation on a classic stitch! If I had to pick my go-to favorite crochet stitch it would probably be the good ole Half Double Crochet! But sometimes you just gotta kick things up a notch, right? (BAM!)

Enter the EXTENDED Half Double Crochet (Or “EHDC”). It’s basically a hybrid of the (US) half double crochet and the double crochet. It adds a little bit of height compared to the typical HDC and while it has a similar look to a DC, it’s got that looks that makes you go, “wait? what stitch IS that!?”

If you like the look of this stitch in a garment, you can check out my latest pattern release- the Fandeco Tee! It’s available on Etsy and Ravelry if you’d like to add one to your summer wardrobe! If you’d like to know more about the pattern I am spilling all the details in this pattern drop video and this post!

I’m going to walk you through how to use this stitch in your own projects- if you prefer a video as your visual, check out this quick and easy tutorial on my YouTube Channel! Give it a like it you found it helpful!

Let’s work the EHDC stitch!

Here’s how it goes (I’ll walk you through with pics in a second!): yarn over insert hook and pull up loop, yarn over and pull through only the first loop on the hook, yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook.

EHDC: yarn over…

…insert hook and pull up loop…

…yarn over and pull through only the first loop on the hook…

…yarn over…

…and pull through all three loops on hook (like a traditional HDC). Done!

AND THERE YA GO!

Happy extended half doubling, my friends! If you make a Fandeco Tee make sure to tag me in it – @fiber.and.fox and use #fandecotee so we can all enjoy your new make together!
